Why the movie "failed" at the box office

Unlike many fans I know... I *loved* the movie. I felt that it was a definite homage to the show. B.R.O.L.L.Y. ... the scene in the hothouse between Emma and Sir August... the "old girl"... in my opinion, all well done. But the best was the homage to "The House That Jack Built" when Emma was in the mansion. "The House that Jack Built" is one of my favorite episodes. If DVDs could be wornout, mine would be on that one, on "The Danger Makers", and "A Touch of Brimstone".

And I think therein lies the rub. You had to be a fan of the show in order to "get" some of the parts of the film. Most people have never seen the show, and couldn't get the inside joke.

I'm sure I'll draw fire for saying I liked the film... I know a lot of fans did not.

Avengers on DVD

I grew up on the Avengers. The Emma Peel episodes are my fav. And I just recently watched all of the Tara King episodes for the first time. At first, I liked her, then I didn't, but by the end I had a warm spot for her. The King episodes are spotty at best. Some are great, some are boring or just plain terrible. I haven't yet seen the Cathy Gale episodes, but I recall watching one when I was 5 or 6 (in 1970 or 71) and liking it. I was a fan of the New Avengers when it originally aired on TV, and just recently watched all of those on DVD except the last three or four. It had a promising start, and I love the theme song (and Joanna Lumley), but the last season of the show was just AWFUL!

My crush on Emma Peel...

... developed at an early age. When the series was first syndicated in the US, my mother loved it, and I was able to watch it whenever it came on. I couldn't get enough of Mrs. Peel. I think it was a very formative influence on me... I've always been attracted to brilliant, multi-talented, self-reliant women ever since. ;)

DVD set

Howdy. I just bought the first DVD set (6 episodes from '66) used for $20!
I've watched the first 3 episodes this week, and am about to watch the 4th tonight: The Girl from Auntie.

I'm glad to finally be seeing the show. I'm also glad I watched the movie first, because I was able to enjoy it immensely. Now that I'm watching the original series, I can see why people were upset about the movie. But lucky me, I got to enjoy them both. =)

i've been looking for the pre-diana rigg episodes of the show and actually have found all the shows released so far in the states, but i wonder if any more will be packaged for US audiences. i've noticed there are additional shows available in europe.

anyone have any info?
